In dentistry, there are three fast-growing employment fields. Dental assisting jobs may range from providing patient care, to record-keeping and scheduling appointments. Dental lab technicians construct, or repair, dentures and prosthetics. Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and apply sealants and fluorides to help protect teeth. They must also learn to take and develop dental x-rays. The median annual wage for dental hygienists was $52,330 in 2015, while dental assistants average $37,500 per year. Dental assisting jobs are projected to grow 19% in the coming decade.

Dental hygienists need an associates degree in dental hygiene. The programs typically take 3 years to complete, and offer laboratory, clinical, and classes in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, radiography, pathology, and periodontics. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed, although requirements vary by state. The Commission on Dental Accreditation, part of the American Dental Association, has accredited more than 300 dental assisting programs.

Medical Imaging Technician Programs

An X-Ray Scan utilizes a collimated X-ray beam to produce an image on film. Several different views are obtained of the body part being imaged. The films are then passed on for review by a radiologist and your primary care physician. This is the oldest method of imaging, but is still the standard in general medical practice. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), on the other hand, provides detailed pictures of the body without ionizing radiation. During this procedure, the patient is placed within a large magnet and radio waves are passed through the body. Computer-generated images clearly show diseased tissue in the brain, spine, and joints.

For further definition, a Cat Scan utilizes a high tech, 16-slice scanner. The computer is able to render different perspectives, in order that the image may be viewed in various planes. Images appear on the technologist?s monitor in a matter of seconds, and because there is no waiting for film to be developed it reduces the need for repeat exams. Digital images are easily stored and transferred, eliminating the dependency on one set of originals, which can be misfiled or otherwise lost.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Many parents make mistakes when filling out the FAFSA information, including leaving some fields blank, spelling names wrong, and not entering social security numbers completely. According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career.

Student loans often carry an origination fee. Origination fees are a one-time charge based on the amount of the loan. Financial aid may be administered through the Department of Education or your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Nebraska Methodist College residency requirements, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. The College Board Scholarship Search service advertises several thousand sources for possible scholarship funds. While local churches or temples may not have the funding to provide scholarships, the organization's headquarters may have student scholarships available.
